New York City has a humid continental climate and experiences all four seasons with hot and humid summers (June-Sept), cool and dry autumns (Sept-Dec), cold winters (Dec-Mar), and wet springs (Mar-June). Average highs for January are around 38°F (3°C) and average highs for July are about 84°F (29°C). However, temperatures in the winter can go down to as low as 0°F (-18°C) (though increasingly rarely) and in the summer, temperatures can go as high as 100°F (38°C) or slightly higher. The temperature in any season is quite variable and it is not unusual to have a sunny 50°F (10°C) day in January followed by a snowy 25°F (-3°C) day. New York can also be prone to snowstorms and nor'easters (large storms similar to a tropical storm), which can dump as much as 2 feet (60cm) of snow in 24-48 hours. Tropical storms can also hit New York City in the summer and early fall. Overall, New York is warmer than inland cities like Chicago and Cleveland.y

Transport in New York


The New Yorkers widely use public transport. The subway in New York, effective and fast, uses a network of lanes on 250 miles. It also uses widely buses and taxis, and ferries (especially in the direction of New Jersey and Staten Island).
People living in distant suburbs, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania or further north in New York use generally their personal vehicle to reach the urban network. 

 

By plane:
New York City has three major airports. 

JFK International Airport, located in Queens. It opened in 1948 and was renamed in honor of President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. Most planes from Europe land at JFK, which has hosted the Concorde aircraft type until 2003.


The Newark Liberty International (Newark, New Jersey) oldest airport in New York, opened in 1928. It is located 15 miles from Manhattan (26 km). However, it was recently renovated, making it one of the most modern airports in the east coast.


La Guardia Airport, It opened in 1939, and is mainly reserved for domestic U.S. flights.
 


By train:

Amtrak is the U.S. company which manages the railway lines for long distances. Originally from Pennsylvania Station, there are links to Washington, DC, for the States of New England, and central United States.
New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) operates a dozen lines into the suburbs of New Jersey, as well as bus lines.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Government agency that oversees passenger traffic from New York through several agencies:
MTA New York City Transit: The network's main metro and buses in New York. The subway is one of the largest in the world, its 27 lines totaling 720 miles and 469 stations.
MTA Metro-North Railroad: trains from Grand Central Terminal, to the Bronx, Westchester County and Connecticut.
MTA Long Island Railroad: complete coverage of the island of Long Island.
Staten Island Rapid Transit line not connected to the rest of the network, which crosses the district of Staten Island from north to south.
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey runs another line between Manhattan and New Jersey, and two routes to airports in Newark (monorail) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (underground tram fast).
Port Authority Trans-Hudson or PATH network of underground and suburban trains that provide service between Manhattan and several cities in New Jersey.


By road:
Traffic is very congested in the evening (around 6 am) and on weekends.
