Presentation of Boston
History of BostonFounded in 1630, the city takes the name of an English town of Lincolnshire (North East) from which its English founders. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century, it develops and grows through its port, the maritime trade relations with Great Britain and the Caribbean. It is also required as the intellectual capital of New England, particularly with the opening of Harvard in 1636 and the birth of several newspapers. Boston culture is very influenced by the values of Puritanism and theology. But the city also acquired a reputation for religious intolerance when it condemns Mary Dyer, a Quaker in 1660. In 1770, the Boston Massacre fuels resentment of the inhabitants. In 1773, they seized the cargo of tea from a British ship and throw overboard: This episode, called the tea party in Boston (Boston Tea Party), is one of the most famous of the American Revolution. The following year, the British government blocked the port and sends soldiers. The war of independence began in 1775 with the Battle of Lexington and Concord, which takes place about thirty miles from Boston. On 17 June 1775 committed the battle of Bunker Hill (Charlestown), which resulted in the defeat of the American insurgents. Boston is known as the cradle of Liberty and several of its historical sites remain popular tourist attractions to date. The war ended in 1783 by the Treaty of Versailles and the creation of the United States of America. Massachusetts became a federated state of the Union in 1788 and governor seat in Boston. Boston is experiencing a revival since the 1970. The conurbation became the second largest U.S. high-tech (computers, biotechnology), behind Silicon Valley in California. The construction of new skyscrapers in the business district reflects the economic revival in Boston. See the full history of Boston on Wikipedia.
