HISTORY OF OSLO

Oslo was founded around the year 1048 by King Harald III.

Oslo has asserted its role as capital from the reign of Håkon V Magnusson (1299-1319), which has established permanent residence and commenced the construction of the Akershus fortress. A century later, Norway was under Danish rule.

Oslo was destroyed by fire in 1624, then rebuilt by King Christian IV. In honor of the king, the city was renamed Christiania and can regain its former name by a decision of the municipality on 1 January 1925.

In the meantime, Christiania could begin to regain its status as a commercial and cultural center of Norway. It became a real capital in 1814 when the union with Denmark ended. The nineteenth century saw the construction of many buildings symbolic, as the Royal Palace (1848), Parliament (1866), the University of Oslo, the National Theater (Nationaltheatret) and the Exchange.

Oslo hosted the sixth Winter Olympics in 1952, thus its status as a major city in the western world. In May 1995, the Oslo Trade were signed by Shimon Peres.
