The centerpiece of the Old Town is the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, first constructed in the 14th century. After it was largely destroyed by an ammunition explosion in 1856, occupying Italian forces rebuilt it as a holiday residence for King Victor Emmanuel III, and it was later used by Benito Mussolini. Today it houses historic artifacts, and visitors can pay a little extra to take one of the self-guided tours up on top of the city walls. Other nearby attractions include Mandráki Harbour, the historic New Market (Νέα Αγορά), the Mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent, and the archaeological remains of the Acropolis of Rhodes.
