The Branderburg Gate, stands tall looking down on the beautiful city of Berlin. Over the years it has seen the city develop and go through times of great sorrow and joy. Once almost completely covered by the Berlin Wall, The Branderburg Gate is now a symbol of freedom and unity for Berliners and the whole of the country. A popular meeting spot for tourists and for Berliners especially at New Years, the wall Received considerable damage in World War II. Since then the Gate was fully restored over a two year period and today it is regarded as the most recognizable landmark in Europe. Received Siegessaule is situated in the center of Tiergarten. It was erected in 1864 to commemorate the Prussian victory after the Danish-Prussian War. The column stands 220 feet tall and visitors to Berlin can climb the 270 steps to the top and be rewarded with magnificent views of the city below. On top of the tower stands a golden statue of the Roman Goddess Victoria who symbolizes Victory and looks down on hurrying Berliners and tourists below. The Milan of Northern Europe!
